Khordha: Normal life came to a standstill across Banapur area in Khordha district starting from the morning today following a 12-hour dawn-to-dusk bandh observed over sub-division status demand for the block.
The bandh called by Banapur-Balugaon-Chilika Subdivision Kriyanushtan Committee witnessed an overwhelming support from various other groups in the Banapur block as shops, business establishments, schools, colleges and other educational institutions remained shut starting from the morning.
Commuters had a tough time in Banapur town during the bandh observation as the public and private transport systems remained off the roads in the area to keep untoward incidents at bay.
Committee members resorted to road blockade and held protest meetings at several places in the town during the bandh observation to press their demand.
The Committee is demanding upgradation of Banapur as a sub-division as it claims the block fulfils the eligibility criteria for the same. It has also decided to take out a rally from Paltan Ground through the town to submit a memorandum to Banapur Tehsildar later in the day over the demand.
