12-hour bandh demanding permanent HC bench cripples life in Kalahandi

Bhawanipatna: Life came to a standstill in Kalahandi district following a 12-hour bandh call given by District Bar Association and Central Action Committee (CAC) demanding establishment of permanent bench of Orissa High Court in the area.

During the bandh protests which started at around 6 am in the morning and will continue till 6 pm, streets wore a deserted look across Kalahandi due to disruption of traffic movement by strikers at several places. Shops and other business establishments also downed their shutters in support to the bandh.

Members of both the organisations resorted to picketing and road blockade by burning tyres at several places starting from the morning posing a tough time for commuters in the area.

Notably, CAC and Bar Association is demanding immediate implementation of Jaswant Singh Commission recommendation to establish a permanent High Court bench in Kalahandi which located at the heart of the undivided Koraput district.

The lawyers also gave a call to shut down court all government establishments in Kalahandi on December 24 last year, which witnessed an overwhelming support from public and a number groups in the district.
