12-hour bandh call by Bar Association cripples life in Puri

12 hour Puri bandhPuri: Normal life was crippled across religious town of Puri on Tuesday following a 12-hour bandh call by the Puri Bar Association protesting the recent murder of lawyer Laxmidhar Mohapatra.

Vehicular movement on the roads came to a grinding halt during the bandh observation in the town as striking lawyers staged road blockades at several places. While bus services were completely stopped in view of the bandh observation, educational institutions also remained closed.

Passengers had a tough time and remained stranded for hours at Atharnala Square in the town as agitating lawyers put up a blockade there, protesting deteriorating law and order situation in the town by burning tyres. They demanded immediate removal of Puri Collector and SP in this connection.

Government offices and business establishments in Puri town also remained shut in view of the bandh related protests since the morning today.

Rail service was badly affected in the town by the dawn to dusk bandh with lawyers resorting to ‘Rail Roko’. Puri-Cuttack and Puri-Gunupur passenger trains remained halted at the Puri Railway Station for hours due to protests.

On the other hand, Orissa High Court Bar Association and Bhubaneswar Bar Association also started a cease-work stir staring from today, extended their support to the Puri Bar Association.
