10-year-old male elephant ‘Chandan’ dies at Nandankanan Zoo

Bhubaneswar: In yet another loss to the Nandankanan Zoological Park a male elephant died in the wee hours today due to sickness.

The jumbo namely Chandan, aged around 10, breathed his last at around 3.40 am under treatment by the Zoo Veterinarians.

As per the report the jumbo was taken ill suddenly on September 13 and was detected with reduced appetite, nasal discharge and swollen glands. Zoo authorities immediately started the treatment of the jumbo as per the advice of the Centre for Wildlife Health, OUAT.

During its 36-hours of treatment ‘Chandan’ didn’t show any improvement and died today.

While it is being suspected that the death of the elephant occurred due to the infection of Herpes virus, it is yet to be established.

The autopsy report of the dead elephant is awaited.
