10 sluice gates closed at Hirakud dam after decrease in rainfall

Sambalpur: In a major to maintain water level at the reservoir the Hirakud dam authorities today closed at least 10 sluice gates out of total 20 which were opened yesterday to release flood water.

The move was made after a decrease in the quantum of rainfall was reported in past 24-hours in the upper catchment areas of river Mahanadi resulting in a fall in water flow into the reservoir in comparison to outflow.

As per the dam authorities, the water level at the reservoir remains at 620.45 ft against the storage capacity of 630 ft by 11.00 am today. Currently, water is being released through 10 sluice gates at the dam.

Informing on the improvement in the situation earlier in the day, State Water Resources Secretary Pradeep Jena had ruled out the possibility of flood in Odisha. He had also admitted the decrease in rainfall in the State in past 24 hours.
