1 student killed, 7 injured as auto rickshaw collides head-on with tractor in Gajapati

Paralakhemundi: A five-year-old student was killed and seven others sustained injuries when an auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a tractor near Ranalai village under R. Udaygiri Police limits in Odisha’s Gajapati district on Saturday.

The victims are the students of a LOM public school in Chheligada in the same locality, locals said.

The deceased has been identified as Lubun Karada, son of Ranjit Karada of Ranalai.

According to reports, the accident occurred at around 9 AM when the auto rickshaw carrying 8 students to the school collided head-on with the tractor which was carrying a paddy threshing machine.

Both drivers reportedly fled from the spot soon after the mishap.

Locals rescued the injured students and rushed them to Chandragiri Community Health Centre where Lubun was declared ‘brought dead’.  The condition of other injured students was stated to be stable, when the last reports came in.

On being informed, police reached the spot and sent the body to the District Headquarter Hospital here for autopsy test.

“A case has been registered in connection to the accident. A man haunt has been launched to nab the drivers of both vehicles. Further investigation is on,” police said.

Meanwhile, locals staged a road blockade at Chheligada square demanding adequate compensation for the victims’ family members and immediate arrest of the drivers of both vehicles.

Vehicular movement has been affected in Paralakehemundi –Berhampur route due to the road blockade.
