1 killed, newly married couple injured in gift parcel explosion

Patnagarh: Causing the wedding revelry to turn sour for a family in Brahmapura area in Balangir district today, an elderly woman was killed and both the bride and groom sustained injury after a gift parcel exploded.

While the injured couple has been identified as Soumya Ranjan Sahoo and wife Reema Sahoo, the deceased woman happens to be the latter’s grandmother-in-law Jemamani Sahoo.

The mishap took place in the kitchen while the newly married couple was opening the gift pack in the presence of Jemamani. The gift pack presented to the couple by an unidentified guest during their reception was found to be a parcel carrying bomb and burst with a loud noise. The explosion left the trio injured on the spot.

Jemamani succumbed to her injuries while being rushed to Balangir District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) by her family members. While the bride is under treatment at the DHH, the groom has been shifted to Ispat General Hospital (IGH) in Rourkela due to deteriorating condition.

Patnagarh Police have reached the spot and started investigation.

Soumya and Reema had tied the knot in Ghantapada village in Boudh district on February 18.
