Women’s Hockey World Cup: India to face Ireland in quarterfinals today

London: India will lock horns with Ireland in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Hockey World Cup at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre here on Thursday.

The 10th raked Indian eves had defeated Italy 3-0 in the playoffs to book a place in the last-8 of the World Cup for the first time since 1978. They had finished seventh in that edition, which was held in Madrid.

In the ongoing tournament, before beating Italy on Tuesday, India had finished the group stage at the third spot in Pool-B.

Indian skipper Rani Rampal said the team has improved match-by-match where they have drawn 1-1 to World No.2 England, lost 0-1 to Ireland, drew 1-1 with the USA in the Pool Stage followed by a triumphant 3-0 score-line against the Italians.

On the other hand Ireland had defeated India 1-0 before ending as table toppers in Pool- B of the prestigious tournament.

In the other quarterfinal scheduled for today, England will meet the Netherlands. Yesterday, Australia and Spain won their last-8 matches and advanced to the semi-finals.

The semifinals will be played on Saturday, with the Final slated for Sunday.
