Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2019: India lose final to South Korea

Ipoh: India lost to South Korea in the final of the 28th Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey tournament here in Malaysia on Saturday. South Korea lifted the title, defeating India in a shoot out 4-2.

In the summit clash, world no. 5 India were clear favourites to lift their sixth Azlan Shah title against the 17th ranked Koreans.

Till the stipulated time both the teams had a score of 1 goal each. Even India were leading with one goal till half time.

Simaranjit Singh hit a goal for India while Jang Jong Hyun netted the goal for South Korea.

In the shoot-out, the Indians missed their first, fourth and fifth attempts and converted just two, while the Koreans just missed their third strike to win the thrilling contest 4-2 and lift the trophy for the third time in the history of the invitational tournament.

For India, Mandeep Singh, Sumit Kumar Junior and Sumit missed from the one-on-one penalty shoot-out situation, while experienced Birendra Lakra and Varun Kumar, converted their chances.

Team India’s Vice-Captain Surender Kumar has been adjudged as the ‘Player of the Tournament’ at the prestigious hockey tournament.

Hosts Malaysia defeated Canada 4-2 and secured the 3rd place. Asian Games Gold medalist Japan stood at 5th place, defeating Poland 6-1.
