Star cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announce retirement from T20Is after World cup victory

Indian star cricketers, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has announced retirement from T20 Internationals after iconic win against South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final.

The Blue team lifted the T20 World Cup trophy after 17 years yesterday. Following the match, Virat Kohli said, “This was my last T20 World Cup, this is exactly what we wanted to achieve. One day you feel like you can’t get a run and this happens, God is great. Just the occasion, now or never kind of situation. This was my last T20 game playing for India. We wanted to lift that cup.”

He further mentioned that it is time for the next generation to take the T20 game forward.

Sometime after him, while addressing a press conference, the Indian team captain, Rohit Sharma said, “This was my last game as well. No better time to say goodbye to this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted, I wanted to win the cup.”

He further added, “I wanted this badly. Very hard to put in words. It was a very emotional moment for me. I was very desperate for this title in my life. Happy that we eventually crossed the line.”

It is worth mentioning here that Rohit made his T20I debut in the inaugural T20 World Cup, against England in Durban in 2007. He has so far played 159 matches for India, scoring 4231 runs.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli made his T20I debut in June 2010. He played 125 games for India in the format and scored 4188 runs.

Notably, India repeated history yesterday after defeating South Africa by seven runs and lifted the T20 World Cup trophy. Virat Kohli got the Player of the match title while Jasprit Bumrah was named the Player of the Tournament.
