The 24-year-old Odia girl collected an aggregate of 4,062 points to clinch the gold medal in the women’s pentathlon event, while Thailand’s Wrtaf Wassana Winatho with 3,915 points,and fellow countrywoman Sunisa Khotseemueang with 3,903 finished at second and third position respectively.
The Chief Minister took the social media route to congratulate Purnima.
“Congratulations Purnima Hembram on winning gold in the Pentathlon event at @Ashgabat_2017. We’re proud of you”, Patnaik tweeted.
Purnima, a student of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), Bhubaneswar, had earlier won bronze medal in the women’s heptathlon at the Asian Athletics Championships in 2015 and 2017.
