Netizens criticize Ruturaj Gaikwad for disrespecting groundsman in 5th T20

The final of the India vs. South T20 series in Bengaluru was interrupted by rain. When India were on 28 runs in 3.3 overs and had lost both openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan, the match was called off. There wasn’t much to talk about during the 5th T20, but a video of Ruturaj Gaikwad mistreating a groundsman is circulating on social media.

Ruturaj Gaikwad mistreated a groundsman

The incident occurred when the batter was waiting for the rain to stop on the Indian dugout. Meanwhile, a member of the ground staff spots an opportunity to capture the Indian opener. The groundsman sat next to Ruturaj and tried taking a selfie. The 25-year-old batsman, though, was not pleased and pushed the groundsman, asking him to keep his distance. Some people defended Rutu’s actions, claiming that he acted in accordance with the bio-bubble protocol. In the ongoing series, though, BCCI has granted players more freedom because they are not in a bio-bubble.

The video drew the attention of netizens, who were quick to chastise the Pune-born player. Fans thought Ruturaj Gaikwad’s behaviour was discourteous, and that a player should not treat fans in this manner. Some supporters remind him of MS Dhoni, his CSK captain, who appreciates his fans even after they invade the stadium to greet him. Here are some Twitteratis reactions:

Gaikwad couldn’t win the South Africa series

It was an opportunity for Ruturaj Gaikwad to make an impression in the absence of KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma. However, he hasn’t performed well in any of the five matches he has played. Ruturaj could score 96 runs in this series, including one fifty in his account. On the other hand, his rival Ishan Kishan did brilliantly, finishing with 206 runs as the series leading run-scorer.

The trophy was shared between India and South Africa when the series concluded in a 2-2 tie. For capturing six wickets in five games, including a four-fer, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was named ‘Player of the Series.’ The Indian team will now play Ireland in a two-match T20I series.
