Jhajharia, Sardar recommended for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

Sardar, DevendraNew Delhi: Two-time Paralympic Javelin Throw gold-medallist Devendra Jhajharia on Thursday became the first paralympian to be recommended for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.

Former hockey captain Sardar Singh’s name has also been recommended for the highest sporting honour of the country.

The awards selection committee headed by Justice (Retd.) CK Thakkar nominated the names and suggested that both to be considered for the award jointly. The final call on this would be taken by the Union Sports Ministry.

Besides, the committee has recommended 17 names for the Arjuna award. The list includes cricketers Cheteshwar Pujara, Harmanpreet Kaur, Paralympic medallists Mariyappan Thangavelu and Varun Bhati, golfer SSP Chawrasia, table tennis player Anthony Amalraj and hockey player SV Sunil.
