Hockey World Cup : India lose to Netherlands in quarterfinals

Bhubaneswar:  Host India lost to the Netherlands 2-1 in a quarter-final encounter of the on-going Men’s Hockey World Cup at the Kalinga Stadium here on Thursday evening.

In the nail-biting clash, the home team took the lead through Akashdeep Singh in the 12th minute but the Dutch managed to equalise through Thierry Brinkman with the last play of the first quarter.

Later, India aggressively attacked to win the match but it was the Netherlands who scored the decisive goal. Mind van der Weerden scored from a penalty corner to seal a berth in the semifinals.

India’s Surendra Kumar received Player of the Match award for his outstanding display of skills and discipline throughout the match.

The Netherlands will clash with defending champions Australia in the Semifinals on Saturday.

In another quarterfinal today, Belgium defeated Germany 2-1. They will take on England in the semifinals on Saturday.
