London: Team India failed miserably in the field whether it’s bowling or fielding to hand over an easy victory to Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy tie tonight. They put up a good total, but failed to defend it.
Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field first. India posted 321/6 in 50 overs – fell short by 20-30 runs more. Rohit Sharma scored 78, while Shikhar Dhawan hit his 10th ODI hundred. He was out for 125. Dhoni made 63. Malinga took two wickets.
Chasing a victory target of 322, Sri Lankan batsmen made a mockery of Indian bowling. They kept hammering the bowlers. Three wickets fell and two of them were run outs.
Sri Lanka reached 322/3 in 48.4 overs and won the match by 7 wickets. Gunathilaka (76), Kusal Mendis (89), Kusal Perera (47), Angelo Mathews (52*) and Gunaratne (34*) were the top scorers.
Kusal Mendis was declared ‘Player of the Match’. India now need to defeat South Africa on Sunday to qualify for the semifinals.
