Belgium beat Netherlands to clinch Men’s Hockey World Cup 2018 title

Bhubaneswar: Belgium lifted the Men’s Hockey World Cup 2018 title after defeating the Netherlands in a thrilling penalty shoot-out at Kalinga Stadium here this evening. Olympic Silver medalists Belgium beat three-time Champion Netherlands 3-2 via sudden death.

The match officials decided for the penalty shoot-outs after the fulltime ended without any goal. However, both the teams scored two each only in the penalty shoot-outs, following which the referees decided for the sudden deaths in which Belgium outplayed the Netherlands and scripted history to win the maiden trophy of the mega tournament.

Belgium’s goalkeeper Vincent Vanasch was declared the Man of the Match.

And the Awards and the Awardees are:

  • Maximum Team Goals: Australian Men’s Hockey Team
  • Fan’s Choice (WC): Seve van Ass
  • Best Goalkeeper: Pirmin Blaak
  • Top Goal Scorer of the Tournament: Alexander Hendrickx  & Blake Govers
  • Player of the Tournament: Arthur Van Doren
  • Best Team Goal Celebration Award: India

Former Indian cricketer Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar was the major crowd puller of the grand evening.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Ministers, MLAs and MPs of Odisha were among other dignitaries who were present during the final day of the international event. International Hockey Federation (FIH) President Dr Narinder Dhruv Batra and Hockey India president Mohammed Mushtaque Ahmad and other Hockey officials were also present and distributed the awards.

The tournament which had started on November 28 ended today with Odisha Governor Prof. Ganeshi Lal and Chief Miniter Naveen Patnaik handing over the Gold medals and trophy to the maiden Hockey World Cup winner.

While the Netherlands settled for the Silver medal Australia, which thrashed England 8-1 earlier in the day, pocketed the Bronze medal.
