WATCH: Octopus takes a wild ride on shark’s back, Netizens say ‘bro got an Uber ride’
Watch the astonishing video of an octopus riding on the back of a shark! This unlikely duo will leave you speechless
In a rare underwater encounter, an octopus was seen riding on the back of a shortfin mako shark, one of the world’s fastest-swimming sharks. The orange-colored Maori octopus was shown on the back of the shark gliding leisurely along the waters of the Hauraki Gulf off New Zealand’s North Island.
Scientists were left amazed when they first saw the strange pair. Marine ecologist Rochelle Constantin first thought that the octopus would be caught in fishing line or a buoy. But a drone inspection brought the incredible vision, known as the “sharktopus.” Constantin joked that the octopus must have been in for the ride of her life, given the 50 km per hour speed of the shark.
Octopuses prefer dwelling on the ocean floor, a place shortfin mako sharks visit rarely. The surprise spotting is a celebration of the secrets of the sea and the wonder that marine scientists will continue to encounter. Indeed, as Constantin mentioned, “One of the best things about being a marine scientist is that you never know what you might see next in the sea.”
Reacting to the viral video, an user commented, “‘Bro got himself an Uber.”
Another user commented, “”You know humanity is doomed when the alien octopi start domesticating the sharks to ride into battle.”
