Korean woman surprised by Indian movie theatre intermission tradition, watch
A Korean woman living in Chennai shared her surprise after experiencing an intermission at an Indian movie theatre for the first time.
This South Korean woman, living in Chennai, melted hearts on the internet when she shared her first experience of watching a film in an Indian theatre and admitted there was only one tradition that came as a complete surprise.
Jung Ae, who is in India with her family, took to Instagram to post a video that chronicled how watching a film in a cinema in India became an unexpected cultural exploration.
At first, it felt rather similar, with her reminiscing about ticket windows, posters, snacks and the movie entrance being very similar to what she had seen in her native South Korea.
The only difference she had noticed was the security checking done at the entrance.
However, she soon came across a surprise of a different kind, after the movie had already commenced.
The screen suddenly turned dark and the lights inside the cinema went up, following which people started getting up from their seats.
A bewildered Jung Ae then assumed that it was some kind of an emergency or that there had been an issue with the screening.
It turned out that it was just the intermission break, which is common during films screened in India.
The Indian woman said that the incident was both surprising and amusing, as generally films in South Korea are shown in one stretch without any mid-screen break.
The video, in no time, became a sensation online, and people loved the candid reaction of Jung Ae to a tradition that Indians take for granted.
Several commenters acknowledged that the intermission is a part and parcel of the movie-watching culture in India and can be quite bewildering for international first-timers.
The video had ignited a debate online around the distinct cultures that render the Indian cinema experience so unique.
