An Indian mother shares five European parenting habits she wants to adopt after travelling across Europe, sparking an online discussion
An Indian mom shared 5 things she learned about parenting in Europe on her social media account, after spending three months traveling the continent, and her insights are sure to change how you think about raising children.
Dr Sukhmani Gumber, who often posts about health and wellness, recently took to her Instagram account to talk about how the trip impacted her views on how we raise our little ones and said she plans to implement the learnings within her family.
Firstly, she said children don’t have to be the centre of every family discussion or change. In many European families, children are included in their parents’ everyday routines – such as eating at a restaurant or shopping and travel.
This allows them to adapt and learn how to adapt to new environments and situations rather than have their lives dictated by their children’s routines.
Secondly, she said we need to let children get bored. This is not to say that parents should intentionally induce frustration.
Instead, the European mum feels that rather than offering their children an endless supply of games or a phone to pass the time, letting children have their moments of boredom allows them to become more resourceful, imaginative and self-reliant in tackling new challenges.
Third, she praised European parents’ habit of teaching children basic table manners at an early age.
Dr Sukhmani observed that the parents patiently guided their children as they ate out in public places and at the table, and also encouraged them to be polite when they were outside.
Regarding food, Dr Sukhmani also said she disliked the concept of labelling foods as ‘good’ and ‘bad.’
Instead of having a rule for kids when it comes to eating, the Indian parent feels that children learn best by observing parents eating balanced diets and acting as role models for healthier habits.
Finally, she shared a point about coping with meltdowns. Instead of losing their patience or showing embarrassment when children threw tantrums, many of the parents she encountered calmly soothed the child before addressing the problem.
