Ex-army man posts decades old handwritten love letter, internet reacts
Viral decades old handwritten love letter shared by ex-Army officer sparks nostalgia, garners millions of views.
A decades-old hand-written love letter has made the rounds on the web after it was shared online by a former Army officer. The letter, which had been written by Captain Dharmveer Singh’s then-girlfriend, now wife, fondly referred to as Thakurain, is dated December 10, 2001. The special thing about this letter is its background. Singh remembered that while he was a cadet at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai, cadets were made to “earn” their mail by performing push-ups – sometimes up to 500 – before the seniors would deliver it. The longer the letter, the more punishing the penalty. Since this letter was exceptionally long, Singh had to perform a punishing 500 push-ups.
Singh posted a video of the letter on Instagram, and it went viral immediately, with more than 1.2 million views. The letter brings alive an era when handwritten letters were the only way to communicate. Singh recollected how those were the good old days when love went into writing letters, and the emotions lasted longer. India Post also couldn’t help but board the nostalgia train, with a beautiful reply: “Isn’t it wonderful how an old letter can still speak? That’s why some bonds last forever in letters.”
The comment section was filled with warm responses, with the users appreciating the depth of emotions in the letter. One of the users posted that the letter didn’t just have words but love, feelings, and every one of those thoughts about each other. Another commenter swooned at a line where Thakurain had written, “I hate the thought of you being punished for my letters,” declaring it to be “so cute.” The hit video is proof of how mighty handwritten letters can be in stirring up emotional responses even after years.
