70-year-old woman wraps snake around neck to spread awareness, viral video sparks outrage
70-year-old woman fearlessly handles non-venomous snake to educate others and dispel common fears about harmless reptiles in India.
Pune: A 70-years-old woman from Pune has gone viral for her bold way of handling a snake. The woman identified as Shakuntala Sutar nonchalantly picked up a harmless rat snake that had entered her home compound. Her son Ganesh clarified that she did it so that people would know that not everything that slithers is dangerous. The grandmother’s motive was to educate and eradicate the phobia of harmless snakes that people carry.
In the viral clip, Shakuntala is seen holding the snake in her bare hands and gently wrapping it around her neck. The rat snake, also referred to locally as Dhaman, is a non-venomous snake that is responsible for keeping rodent populations under control. Her family explained that she handled the snake in order to teach others, and her fearlessness has left the world speechless. Many people were commenting about the bravery and selflessness in handling the snake to educate others and few others questioning the safety of her actions.
