ADJ court sentenced life imprisonment to 4 accused in the high-profile double murder of an elderly couple in Acharya Vihar of Bhubaneswar.
Bhubaneswar: Justice has been finally delivered as the Bhubaneswar Additional District Judge (ADJ) court heard a 12-year old case and sentenced the four accused to rigorous life imprisonment. The court heard the case of the high-profile double murder of an elderly couple in Acharya Vihar of Bhubaneswar recently.
On September 14, 2012, the four accused entered the house of the elderly couple to steal money. The couple identified as Kunjabihari Panigrahi (72) and his wife Jyotshna Panigrahi were attacked brutally for a loot. Three of them were staying at a hostel run by the couple’s daughter at Patia. As greed overpowered humanity, the four accused hatched a plan to loot the couple.
The ADJ court gave rigorous life imprisonment to the four accused- Vijay Yadav, Priyaranjan Pati, Ranjit Jena and Butu Jena. Vijay was pursuing BBA and was the master mind of the crime. Priyaranjan and Ranjit were doing MBA while Butu Jena was a local beetel shop owner.
They were award rigorous life imprisonment under Section 302 and a fine of Rs 20,000 and under 449, 394 and 120 (B) section 10 years of life imprisonment and Rs 10,000 fine each, failing which they will be awarded 2 years imprisonment in the Acharya vihar couple murder.
Police said that, they had seized 1 laptop, 2 mobile phones, gold jewellery and Rs 900 cash from the accused. Police was successful in nabbing the accused after a 5-day search on September 19, 2012.
The four accused broke into the house of the couple on September 14, 2012 at around 8.30 pm. They first attacked the landlady when she tried to resist them. One of them took a laptop modem cable and strangulated her to death. As she died, they were scared and fled the scene after hitting Kunjabihar Panigrahi, a retired superintending engineer.
