Kendrapara: Two sisters from Odisha’s Kendrapada district will be conferred with the Indian Council for Child Welfare’s National Bravery Award for 2019.
Purnima Giri and Sabita Giri, who belong to Nipania village under Mahakalpada Kendrapara district, will receive the prestigious award at a function scheduled to be held in Delhi in January, 2020.
The minor girls had risked their lives and managed to save around 20 persons from drowning in the boat-capsize incident on January 2, 2019.
In the fateful day, around 77 persons, including women and children , of Hasina village under Kujang block in Jagatsinghpur district, had been to Hukitola in Mahakalpada area on a boat a picnic.
However, their boat capsized while they were returning after the picnic.
The sister duo jumped into the swirling waters of the Mahanadi to save lives of passengers of the capsized boat. At least 10 people, including seven children, were killed in the incident.
Earlier, the sisters were felicitated by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for their extraordinary courage.
