Supreme Court upholds HC order, stays release of ‘Mahaprabhu Jagannath’ animation film
As per the petitioner, certain scenes, dialogues and events in the film related to Lord Jagannath and the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri have been depicted in a manner inconsistent with religious beliefs, scriptures and traditions.
New Delhi: The release of the animated film ‘Mahaprabhu Jagannath’ has been stayed. The Supreme Court has upheld the interim order of the High Court.
The Apex Court has directed that the film cannot be released until the Rath Yatra concludes. Advocate General Pitambar Acharya shared this information.
It is worth mentioning that allegations have been made that the animation film has certain scenes that distorts the culture, rituals and traditions of Mahaprabhu.
Puri Shree Mandira Managing Committee member Mahesh Sahu had filed a petition in this regard. Senior Advocate Tushar Mehta represented the State Government in the Supreme Court, while AG Pitambar Acharya appeared for the Shree Mandir Administration.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Orissa High Court had imposed a stay on the release of the film. The film was scheduled to release in theatres today, July 17.
According to the petitioner, certain scenes, dialogues and events in the film related to Lord Jagannath and the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri have been depicted in a manner inconsistent with religious beliefs, scriptures and traditions. Parts of the film could hurt the religious sentiments of devotees.
