Puri: In a sorrowful incident, the Akshay Danda bearing the Neelachakra flag broke down at Srimandir here. As a result the Neelachakra flag could not be furled atop the Srimandir. It was simply tied on top of Srimandir on Friday.
Akshay Danda is the bamboo stick holding the Neelachakra flag. Every day the Neelachakra flag is changed in the afternoon. Chunara servitors were in-charge of changing the flag on the top of Srimandir. However, this incident when the Akshay Danda broke down has hurt the sentiments of the devotees. The breaking down of the Akshay Danda is regarded as an omen and devotees have expressed grief about it.
The sorrowful incident happened when the Chunara servitor had climbed on to the top of Srimandir to change the Neelachakra flag. At that time the Akshay Danda broke down and then the servitors tied the Neelachakra flag on the top.
