Odisha: Two tribal women tied to pole, assaulted over conversion charges; 3 arrested
Two tribal women were reportedly tied to a pole and were assaulted by a group of villagers on charges of converting some locals to other faith at Chhankhanpur village in Nilagiri area of Odisha's Balasore district.
Balasore: Two tribal women were reportedly tied to a pole and were assaulted by a group of villagers on charges of converting some locals to other faith at Chhankhanpur village in Nilagiri area of Odisha’s Balasore district.
The matter came to light after some videos of the incident went viral. In the video clip, the women could be seen surrounded by a group of people and being assaulted by some of them on charges of forcibly converting tribals of the locality.
Base on the complaint of one of the locals, the two women were booked under Section 4 of Odisha Freedom of Religion Act, 1967 and Section 299 (deliberate and malicious insult of a religion), Section 3(5) (joint criminal liability) and Section 351 (2) (criminal intimidation) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
On the other hand, police also booked some people under various sections of Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and the BNS based on the complaint of the women.
Speaking about the incident, Balasore SP Raj Prasad said that a complaint was lodged for forced conversion and another counter case of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was also registered.
Till now, three accused individuals have been arrested and forwarded to court for the case of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and four others have been issued notice, he said adding that in the case of forced conversion, three persons have been summoned.
Further investigation is underway, and stringent measures will be taken against the culprits, the Balasore SP assured.
