Odisha: Nandankanan zoo receives 19 animals of new species from Gujurat

The Nandankanan zoo have received nineteen animals of four species with the approval of the Central Zoo Authority.

Barang: The Nandankanan zoo have received nineteen animals of four species with the approval of the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) to boost diversity. The CZA approved an exchange of animals between Nandankanan Zoo and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Zoological park in Gujarat’s Surat.

The Nandankanan Zoo has received 5 smooth-coated otters, 2 Indian grey wolves, 10 Indian star tortoises, 2 silver pheasants. All the animals will be kept in quarantine for about a month before they were released into the wild.

In exchange for the new 19 animals, 14 animals of 5 species will be sent from Nandankanan to Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Zoo in Gujarat.

In 2000, the smooth-coated otters had become extinct in Nandankanan. Currently, there are 177 species of animals in Nandankanan.
