Odia jawan of Assam Rifles martyred in gun battle with ultras in Manipur

Sambalpur: An Odia jawan of Assam Rifles has attained martyrdom in terrorist attack during a combing operation in Manipur’s Chandel district.

The jawan has been identified as Champeswar Mahakud of Dhaurakhaman village under Redhakhol police limits in the district. Youngest among the sons of Suranchi Mahakud of the village, Champeswar was working in Assam Rifles since 2001.

Champeswar, who set out on a combing operation along with fellow jawans in Chandel village in the north-eastern state Manipur sustained bullet injuries during an encounter with suspected members of outlawed People’s Liberation Armay (PLA) group.

While the jawan died in the same night, his death was confirmed by his battalion yesterday.

The mortal remains of the martyred jawan has been sent to Odisha and are expected to reach his native village today.

Champeswar is survived by his wife and an 8-year-old son who live in Angul.
