Odia IPS officer Basant Rath resigns, likely to join politics

Bhubaneswar: Senior IPS officer Basant Rath tendered his resignation from service on Sunday. The suspended Odia IPS officer, who has been suspended informed about his resignation on social media.

In a letter to the Chief Secretary of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir Arun Kumar Mehta, Basant Rath stated that he has decided to take voluntary retirement to participate in electoral politics.

“I wish to resign from the Indian Police Service in order to be able to participate in electoral politics. Please consider this letter as my request for resignation/voluntary retirement and process it accordingly,” Basant Rath said to the Chief Secretary of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir in his resignation letter.

Basant Rath has shared the resignation letter on his Twitter handle KangriCarrier. He has shared the copy of resignation letter addressed to Director General of Police Dilbag Singh and Commandant General Home Guard H K Lohi.

“If I ever join a political party, it WILL be BJP. If I ever contest an election, it WILL be from Kashmir. If I ever join politics, it WILL be before March 6, 2024,” he had said in a Twitter post earlier today.

It is to be noted here that Rath was popular among people for his effective regulation of traffic. However, several others questioned his style of functioning and then he was suspended by the central government for gross misconduct and misbehaviour.
