National Seminar on Kidney Diseases and Transplantation at KIMS on World Kidney Day

Bhubaneswar: World Kidney Day was observed at KIIT University under the banner of Indian Academy of Nephrology, Dialysis & Kidney Transplantation on Saturday. This year’s theme was “Kidney Health for Everyone Everywhere”. MP Soumyaranjan Pattnaik inaugurated the event; and the main aim of the event was to create awareness regarding kidney diseases and its precautions and cures.

A galaxy of experts in Kidney diseases, Dialysis & Kidney Transplantation participated in the seminar and discussed on recent development in kidney diseases treatment and kidney transplantation.

Inaugurating the seminar Soumyaranjan Pattnaik, MP, Rajya Sabha said, “Nowadays health care for all is a huge challenge for all of us. Making oneself healthy is not sufficient; a healthy society is essential and also beneficial.” He urged doctors, health care experts, policy makers and government to try to evolve solutions to this ever-growing challenge.

Padma Shree Dr Subrat Acharya, Pro-Chancellor, KIIT Deemed to be University said, ”The rate of kidney diseases is highest this year in comparison to the data of last three years. Change in our lifestyle is the main cause behind it. We should always try to be physically and mentally fit.”

Dr SK Agarwal, Secretary, Indian Academy of Nephrology added that public awareness on kidney diseases is the need of the hour. Once the society is made aware then only they can take precautionary steps and be aware of cures if faced with any kidney related diseases.

Informing the regarding the emerging danger- Chronic Kidney Disease(CKDU)- Dr S. C. Dash, Professor of Nephrology, KIMS and Professor Emeritus, KIIT Deemed to be University said,” The cause behind CKDU has not yet been identified. But it has been seen primarily in Narsinghpur, Badamba, Jajpur, Athagarh and Angul areas and also in many other areas of Odisha due to the presence of a heavy metal like Cadmium in the drinking water. This was revealed in a recent survey.

CKDU has also been reported from other countries like Srilanka, Latin American and African Countries.

Adding information about CKDU, Dr Dash said that the treatment is largely preventive in an early stage, and later on dialysis & transplantation are the best way to survive. However every patient of CKDU may not be suitable for a transplant due to age factor and co-existing incurable systemic disease like Heart, Brain and Lung diseases.

Among others present were Prof HK Mohanty, VC, KIIT Deemed to be University, Major General Dr PK Pattnaik, Principal, KIMS who also addressed the inaugural session.
