Monsoon Likely to Hit Odisha in Next 6-8 Days, IMD Says Conditions Favourable; El Niño Threat Looms
As per the weather report, the current weather pattern is favourable for monsoon onset.
Bhubaneswar: Southwest monsoon is likely to reach Odisha within the next 6 to 8 days as weather conditions have turned favourable, the regional MeT Department said on Saturday.
According to meteorological assessment, monsoon winds are expected to advance into parts of Odisha by June 12-14. The progress of monsoon has already been reported in Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Mizoram, and Manipur today.
As per the weather report, the current weather pattern is favourable for monsoon onset. With atmospheric conditions turning supportive, southwest monsoon winds are likely to move further into Odisha and cover some regions of the state within a week.
Even as monsoon advances, the threat of El Niño is growing. The World Meteorological Organization has warned that El Niño in the Pacific Ocean has already started and may develop into a “Super El Niño”. Such an event can raise global temperatures by 2°C above normal and trigger extreme weather and natural disasters.
IMD has earlier forecast that monsoon rainfall this year could be 10% below normal due to El Niño impact. However, the National Disaster Management Authority has estimated a lower impact in India because monsoon and rainfall are also controlled by the Indian Ocean Dipole, which may offset the negative effects of El Niño to some extent.
