Mangrove forest in Odisha’s Bhitarkanika can work like a natural shield to provide protection from cyclone DANA!, watch

Rajnagar: Mangrove forest in the Bhitarkanika of Odisha can work like a natural shield to provide protection through surge and wind suppression during cyclones like DANA.

As per reports earlier also the mangrove forests in Odisha have provided protection against tropical cyclones. After getting hit with Mangrove forests the cyclones become weaker.

The mangrove forest of Bhitarkanika has come into limelight after the cyclone ‘Dana’ is estimated to make landfall near Bhitarkanika.

Experts estimate that the mangrove forest standing on the beach is likely to weaken the cyclone.

As per reports, the mangrove forest stood as a protective barrier even during the Super Cyclone of 1999 and Cyclone Yas in 2021 and cyclone Bulbul in 2020. A mangrove forest is a natural shield against cyclonic storms. The wind speed decreases after the cyclone collides with the gusty winds. In 2019, after Cyclone Bulbul hit the mangroves, its speed reduced to 20 km per hour. Mangrove forest also protects human life and properties by stopping the sea tide.

The strong roots of the interspersed mangrove forest provide shelter from cyclones by stopping the sea tides. Mangrove forest also stops the erosion of the seashore.

In the wake of cyclone DANA it has been predicted that 1 to 2 meters high sea tide is likely to rise in the sea of 3 districts under the influence of cyclone ‘Dana’.

Odisha has an area of 259 square kilometres of mangrove forest. Out of that, only the Bhitarkanika has 209 square kilometers of mangrove forest.
