New Delhi: BJD MP Bhartruhari Mahtab on Wednesday sought an adjournment motion during the zero hour of the Lok Sabha on dispute regarding Mahanadi river water sharing issue between Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

Mahatab, the Parliamentary Party leader of BJD, said that Mahanadi river water sharing issue is a national issue, and hence it needs to be discussed on the floor of the House to resolve the dispute between two states.

The Cuttack MP also accused the Centre of going back on its promise and compromising its neutrality. He also pointed out that the Union Government had presented various wrong information at the Supreme Court in this connection.

However, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said that the issue is important but can be discussed later.

“Today we had moved an adjournment motion for the third time. However, the Lok Sabha Speaker did not accept the motion following which we stood beside our seat and lodged a protest,” Balangir MP and Parliamentary Party spokesperson of BJD Kalikesh Singhdeo said while speaking to reporters outside the Parliament.

“Mahanadi river is the lifeline of Odisha. We will continue to protest at every level against the construction of illegal barrages over Mahanadi river by the Chhattisgarh government,” he added.
