Mahanadi Case: SC defers hearing to Oct 9 as Centre seeks time

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday deferred the next hearing on the Odisha Government’s petition against Chhattisgarh in the Mahanadi water dispute case to October 9 after the Central Government sought four weeks’ time to submit a report on the formation of a special tribunal for the purpose.

The decision to defer the hearing date was taken by a two-judge bench comprising Justice L Nageswara Rao and Justice S A Bobde.

Notably, the petition by the Odisha Government has sought the Supreme Court’s intervention in persuading Chhattisgarh to stop all barrage construction work in the upstream of Mahanadi as well as formation of a tribunal to adjudicate on the water dispute issue between the two states.

According to information, Chhattisgarh is constructing around a dozen barrages in the upstream of Mahanadi posing a serious threat to Odisha, especially during the non-monsoon period of the year.
