Low pressure over Bay of Bengal triggers heavy rain in Odisha, Orange alert issued to 4 districts

Bhubaneswar: The regional centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that heavy rain is likely to lash Odisha due to the low pressure over Northwest Bay of Bengal. The weather department has further issued orange warning for heavy to very heavy rain in five districts.

According to the recent bulletin of the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar the low pressure area persists over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh. Due to the effect of it, heavy rain is likely to continue in Odisha for the next three to five days.

The weathermen has issued orange warning to four districts of the state including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore and Bhadrak for heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 cm to 11 cm). Furthermore, yellow warning for heavy rain (7 cm to 11 cm) has been issued to districts including Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Samblapur, Deogarh, Bargarh, Nuapada, Balangir, Boudh and Sonepur.

Likewise, yellow warning has been issued to Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur and Nuapada for tomorrow. On August 19th, heavy rain is likely to lash Sundergarh, Jhasuguda, Bargarh, Deogarh, Keonjhar and Sambalpur.

Due to heavy to very heavy rain in the state, the weather department have suggested some possible impacts and actions. These are,

  • Temporarily water logging likely in low lying areas and underpass road.
  • Poor visibility during intense spell of rain and traffic congestion in urban areas. Some damages to kutchha Road and possibility of wall collapsed of vulnerable kutchha houses.
  • Some damages to vegetables and horticultural crops likely.
  • Avoid staying in vulnerable kutchha houses. Advisory on traffic congestion may be followed before leaving for your destination.
  • Arrangement for drainage of excess water from nursery bed, preparations for sowing of paddy crops, seed collections may be done
