Lioness Bijli gives birth to 5 cubs at Nandankanan in Odisha’s Bhubaneswar, watch
Bhubaneswar: In a good news, lioness Bijli has given birth to as many as five cubs at the Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) in the capital city of Odisha. After birth of these 5 cubs, the total number of lions in this zoological park has raised to 26. Animal lover as well as people of Odisha has welcomed the birth of the new guests at NZP.
As per report, Bijli was brought from Indore Zoo in the year 2020. It is now 9 years old. This is for the fourth time that the lioness has given birth. This time the litter got sired by the lion Samrat. The mother lion and her cubs have been put under CCTV surveillance.
It is to be noted that lioness Bijli delivered for the first time in 2021 when it gave birth to 3 cubs. Out of them 2 died and the third cub was not accepted by the mother. Hence, it was hand reared at Nandankanan by the employees.
The second litter of the lioness was in March 2022 when it produced a cub. The same was named Kamini. It was also hand reared at Nandankanan.
The third litter was witnessed in 2022 November when it produced 5 cubs. Out of them 1 died while the other cubs were reared by the mother itself. Out of these, two cubs were handed over to Alipore Zoo on 27.08.2024.
The mother is taking care of the cubs and hence not separated. Therefore Sex determination of the cubs is yet to be done.
