Khurda: As the cases of jaundice keep on rising in the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at Gurujang in Khurda district, the school has been closed for seven days. The decision to close the school has been reportedly taken as a precautionary measure.

This decision was taken after discussions with a Delhi based inspection team. As a result the school will remain closed till January 14, as said by the Principal. Following the decision, parents have been issued notices and are asked to take their children back to home.

Following the detection of jaundice in the school, the health and inspection teams rushed to the school inorder to access the situation and collect samples. A WATCO team also examined the water supply, while the medical teams from Khurda district conducted health investigations.

The school has strength of 560 students from which 200 students have already returned home. On the morning of Monday, 30 students were tested positive for jaundice, from which most of the students were from class 6 and 12. However there are confusions over the exact number of cases. Though some sources estimate it to be 30 to 40, the school’s health team has put a figure of 50.

The parents have shown anger as the infection continued to spread and have criticised the school administration for the lapses in the preventive measures.
Meanwhile, Vice Principal NC Chakra said that the health check-ups of the students began last week after several of them reported symptoms such as fever, cold and jaundice. He mentioned that the effected students were given preliminary treatment.
