Hirakud dam to open more gates as water level continues to rise, warning issued to locals
Hirakud Dam is set to open more gates as the reservoir's water level rises due to heavy rainfall upstream. Authorities have issued warnings for people living along the Mahanadi River.
Sambalpur: The Hirakud dam authorities have geared up to open more sluice gates of the reservoir as its water level is steadily rising due to the heavy downpour in the upper catchment regions.
Warning sirens were blown before opening the gates to warn those residing on the river banks.
As per reports, the water level at the Hirakud reservoir is currently at 611.50 feet.
Sources revealed that the reservoir is currently experiencing an inflow of 1,57,442 cusecs per second and releasing 33,062 cusecs of water.
Final decision about the number of sluice gates to be opened will be taken after 8AM on the basis of the water level of the reservoir.
The administration has advised the inhabitants along the Mahanadi River and in downstream areas to stay on alert.
They said that if heavy rains continued in the upstream areas the water level of the reservoir would go up and more water has to be released.
