Cuttack: People became worried in Cuttack of Odisha today after a gharial crocodile was spotted on the Kathajodi River bed. The reptile was seen sunning on the sand of the River while mostly people watched it from the Subhash Bose setu. This is reportedly a gharial, which is called ‘Thantia Kumbhira’ in Odia.

As per reports, hundreds of people who were travelling on the Subash setu in Cuttack today afternoon parked their vehicles here and there on the bridge and rushed towards the wall of the bridge to catch the rare scene of a wild beast resting on the sand of the River Kathajodi.

However, people should not be worried about this beast, because though it is wild, the nature of this reptile is not wild. It neither haunts humans or any big animals.

People should not be worried about this reptile because it does not hurts humans. This is not a crocodile, which haunts humans and other animals, rather gharials eat fishes and other small amphibians. Moreover, this particular gharial must be one from the gharial breeding centre of the Nandankanan Zoological Park, Bhubaneswar. You must have known that earlier also such a gharial had ventured here to this River bed. This one is believed to be that particular gharial. However, there is nothing to panic, said DFO Ajit Satpathy.
