German woman rape accused Bitihotra Mohanty dies while undergoing treatment
Bhubaneswar: The German woman rape accused Bittihotra Mohanty has breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Bhubaneswar. The accused was the son of a DG police and the case was a much discussed one.
Reports say that, Bittihotra was being treated for stomach cancer in AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in Bhubaneswar where he breathed his last on Monday. The youth was the son of a former DGP (Prisons) Bidya Bhusan Mohanty.
It is worth mentioning that Bitti was in the news in 2006 after he was accused of raping a German woman, who was allegedly his classmate. The rape took place at Alwar in Rajasthan. A mega drama unfolded following the incident.
He was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment by a Jaipur fast track court in the same year after he admitted to the crime. However, the convict had absconded in 2006 after getting parole on the ground of visiting his ailing mother.
Almost seven years later, he was arrested from Kerala in March 2013 where he was living by changing his identity. Ironically, Bitihotra Mohanty had managed to get a job in a bank and was staying in Kerala under a fake identity as Raghav Ranjan. He was subsequently arrested by Rajasthan police.
In the year 2023, the Supreme Court had granted conditional bail to Bittihotra Mohanty. The apex court while hearing the bail plea moved by Bitti released him on a Rs 2.5 lakh surety. Besides, it ordered him for monthly appearance at the Cantonment police station during the bail period and to surrender his passport if has any.
