People have thronged various paju pandals to offer prayers to the Elephant God. Flowers, Chandan (Sandalwood paste), Fruits, Laddus (sweets) etc. are being offered to the Lord. Most school children wear new clothes on the occasion. With popular bhajan songs blaring on loudspeakers, the atmosphere is filled with religious spirit.
The government has tightened security in religiously sensitive areas to avoid any untoward incident during Ganesh puja.
According to Hindu tradition, Ganesha is the god of auspicious beginnings, good fortune and remover of hurdles. Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated to mark the birthday of Lord Ganesha, younger son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
