Flood like situation in North Odisha: Jalaka and Subarnarekha Rivers overflow, watch
Basta police station and SDPO office are inundated with 3 feet of floodwater as the district has been receiving heavy rainfall due to the effect of a low pressure system.
Balasore: A flood-like situation has gripped parts of North Odisha due to heavy rainfall affected by a low-pressure system. The water levels of the Jalaka and Subarnarekha rivers are rising beyond the danger mark, posing a significant threat to nearby areas.
At Mathani, the Jalaka River’s water level has surpassed the danger mark of 6.50 meters, reaching 6.90 meters by 6 am today. Similarly, at Rajghat, the Subarnarekha River’s water level has exceeded the danger mark of 10.36 meters, reaching 11.32 meters.
The situation is critical, with hundreds of hectares of farmland in Basta block flooded and 4 feet of floodwater flowing over the Mathani riverbank.
The Basta police station and SDPO office are also inundated with 3 feet of floodwater. Several villages are affected, and people are facing difficulties in commuting due to the floodwater.
The administration has taken steps to rescue people from the lower areas and has arranged for their shelter as well as dry and cooked food. The ODRAF team has rescued 15 members of 4 families from Gunturisahi village and relocated them to safer areas.
There is a fear that the river embankments are weak in various places, and if the Swiss gate at Khalajhari under Basta Block is breached, 18 panchayats may be cut off from the outside world.
The affected areas include 8 panchayats of Basta block and 2 panchayats of Sadar block, with thousands of people likely to be impacted.
Officials, including the Basta Tehsildar, BDO, and senior officials from the Water Resources Department, have visited the flood-affected areas to assess the situation.
