Farmer Suicide: Stir called off after assurance for compensation

stirBargarh: The agitating members of ‘Chashi O Krushak Sangathan’ of Kalapani village ended their nightlong stir and road blockade over local farmer Brunda Sahu’s suicide, after getting an assurance of compensation to the deceased’s kin from the district administration on Thursday.

The decision was taken at around 4am after Bargarh MLA Debesh Acharya along with District Collector called on the protestors and had a talk to pacify them. During the talks, the agitators were assured that the family members of Sahu would be allocated with 4 decimal of farmland, a house under Biju Pucca Ghar Yojna (BPGY) and a compensatory amount of Rs 42,000.

Following the assurance, family members of the deceased farmer performed his last rites at Barahagoda gram panchayat cremation ground this morning.

Locals staged a road blockade for 16 hours placing the body of Brunda Sahu on NH 26 near Kalapani, starting from yesterday. He died consuming poison yesterday after setting his paddy crop on fire on Tuesday over Brown Plant Hopper Pest (BPHP) attack.

Meanwhile, Mihir Chand Mallick, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has issued directives to the Collectors of 8 districts in the state to conduct a review of the crop loss in their respective regions and submit a report within 2 days. The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has also issued a notice to Bargarh Collector in the farmer suicide case.
