Changing name of Puri not required, says Shankaracharya

Puri: The Shankaracharya of Gobardhan pitha in Odisha’s Puri Swami Nischalananda Saraswati on Friday provided his reaction over the demand of changing name of Puri to Jagannath Puri.

Shankaracharya reportedly said that since Puri is as such known as Jagannath Puri across the world there is no need of changing of the name. He asked whether there is any need of changing name of the holy town while it is known as Jagannath Puri.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today paid a courtesy visit to the Puri seer. On this occasion Shankaracharya suggested him to continue the developmental works at Banaras Hindu University. Pradhan spent about half an hour with Shankaracharya during the courtesy visit.

Later Pradhan paid his obeisance to Lord Jagannath. He said that it would be good to change name of Puri to Jagannath Puri. For the last few days some organisations of Puri have been demanding the name change. The same issue has also been reportedly discussed by the Srimandira Managing Committee. Today, Jagannath Sena had also demanded the name change.
