Koraput: BSF jawans have rescued a rare flying squirrel from the forest of Koraput district in Odisha. It was rescued from the forest behind the BSF camp in Ramgiri under Gupteshwar forest.

As per reports, a few jawans of the 180 BN BSF, stationed at Ramgiri, were out on patrol when they rescued the flying squirrel near the camp.

Sensing that the squirrel was sick, the jawans provided first aid and gave it water to recover. Later, Ramgiri BSF Company Commander Amit Kumar Singh and jawan Lambodar Parida handed over the rescued flying squirrel to the Gupteshwar forest officer. The forest department is taking care of it’s treatment now.

The jawans said that in our regional language it is called flying mouse. These are very rare among the wild animals. Today, we are happy that this animal has been seen after many years. But due to deforestation and destruction of their habitat, their number is decreasing day by day. If the forest along with their habitat is protected, such rare animals seen in Koraput district can be protected. The government and the forest department need to try to increase the number of such rare animals.
