Sambalpur: A baby elephant was rescued this morning after a long 10-hours rescue mission after it fell into a well on Sunday. The rescue operation took place near Basiapada village in Sambalpur forest range in Odisha.
According to sources, a two to three year old elephant calf, which was moving with a herd of five elephants, fell into the well when the herd was passing through the Basiapada village in the village. The calf is said to have feel in the well due to the darkness. After the baby elephant fell into the well, the herd went on a rampage in the village.
Later, the forest department started the rescue operation after the herd of elephants went into the forest when more people started to gather in the area.
Officials demolished an entire side of the well wall with the help of a JCB, eventually cutting a ramp into the earth to allow the calf to walk out on its own instead of being lifted vertically.
