Army Officer From Odisha Lt Gen Chandi Prasad Mohanty Likely To Be Appointed As Vice-Chief Of Indian Army

Bhubaneswar: Army Officer from Odisha Lt General Chandi Prasad Mohanty likely to become the next Vice-Chief of Indian Army.

According to reports, Lt Gen Chandi Prasad Mohanty, who is the present General Officer Commanding in-chief of Southern Command, likely to be appointed as the 42nd Vice-Chief of the Indian Army.

He would be the first Odia officer to be appointed as Vice Chief, which is the second-highest appointment in the Indian Army after Chief of Army Staff.

Mohanty was born to Jitendra K. Mohanty and Sarada Mohanty in Jayabada village under  Jagatsinghpur Municipality of Odisha.

After completing his studies at Bagashai UP School up to class VI, he joined the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun. He was the first Odia to take admission in RIMC. Later, he entered the National Defence Academy (NDA).

The senior Army Officer holds an M.Phil and a master’s degree in Management. Prior to this, he had his graduation from Wellington-based Defence Services Staff College.

Moreover, during his study career Lt Gen Chandi Prasad Mohanty conducted extensive studies of China, South Asia, and northeastern India.

Mohanty was commissioned a Second lieutenant in the Rajput Regiment in June 1982. He has commanded battalions in both Jammu and Kashmir and in Northeast India and has held staff appointments in an armoured brigade and in the military secretariat. He commanded a UN multi-national brigade in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and has served as a military advisor to the Seychelles government.

He has also commanded a mountain brigade along the Indo-Chinese border and a mountain division in Assam in 2014.

Besides, he also served as Director-General of operational logistics and strategic movement at the Integrated Headquarters of Ministry of Defence (Army) at New Delhi.

After the Doklam incident, he commanded the XXXIII Corps in the Eastern Command and was then appointed GOC Uttar Bharat Area at Bareilly.
