10-ft breach in Indravati south canal inundates acres of land in Kalahandi

Kalahandi: A 10-feet long breach in Indravati south canal in Kalampur block of Kalahandi district of Odisha has inundated acres of land on Thursday.

The wide breach in the embankment has triggered a risk of crop damage as the water has flooded into the Pajen village under Jayapatna Tehsil and damaged standing crops in acres of agricultural land along with two to three houses have been inundated. However, there has been no loss of life reported.

The enraged farmers of the area have said that the breach in the canal occurred due to the substandard work by the authorities. Meanwhile, the locals informed to the concerned authority.

On getting information, Sub Divisional Officer Pranab Pradhan along with Assistant Engineer Pratap Behera arrived at the spot and initiated an investigation.

It it to be noted that several acres of farm lands had been inundated early this year following a breach in the Indravati Mega lift canal bund near Majhiguda under Koksara block.

The mega irrigation project was inaugurated by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on January 14 to help lakhs of people to irrigate lands in the district.
