Shamli: A Journalist, who was covering the derailment of a train in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district, was punched, slapped and abused by a group of Railway policemen as he pleads with them to stop, in a video that has gone viral on social media.

The incident occurred in western Uttar Pradesh at a time when the state is in news over the arrest of journalists, on charges of “defaming” Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

“They were in plain clothes. One hit my camera and it fell down. When I picked it up, they hit and abused me. I was locked up, stripped and they urinated in my mouth,” said Amit Sharma, a reporter working for TV channel News24.

Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel who were present at the spot, abused, kicked and beat up Amit. They also allegedly snatched his camera and phone while he was shooting from the spot of the derailment.

After learning about the incident, several local journalists rushed to the police station and put the video footage of cops beating up Amit Sharma on social media, news agency IANS reported.

The journalists also reportedly contacted senior officials at the police headquarters. Amit Sharma was released this morning after protests by the other journalists at the local police station.
