Lucknow: In a bid to obtain admission to an MBBS medical course, a 24-year-old man of the village of Khalilpur in Jaunpur district in Uttar Pradesh allegedly amputated part of his left foot to be admitted as a person with a disability to claim disability quota benefits.

According to the police, the young man, identified as Suraj Bhaskar, who approached the police on January 18 to inform them that he was being attacked by unknown people who had left him in a coma with a severed left foot. At the complaint of his, an FIR was lodged against unknown individuals on the charges of an intended murder, an investigation was initiated.

Nevertheless, during the investigation, police officers realized that his statements were rather inconsistent, and there were facts suggesting the injury was self-inflicted. A personal journal found by the police included a note concerning his goal to get into MBBS in 2026, and a telephone trace and questioning of his girlfriend aroused additional suspicion over his motive.
